After-School Tutoring

Program: Twice each week, professional instructors guide teen tutors Kyare Leonardin creating lesson plans grounded in the five core components of literacy development: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension. On two alternating days, teens use those lesson plans to provide individual or small group instruction to 2nd and 3rd grade students who require additional support to become proficient readers.

Scope: During the 2017-2018 academic year, Reach will serve almost 450 participants – 225 tutors and 225 students – at eighteen schools across the District of Columbia.

Impact: Historically, elementary school students have seen growth of 1.5 grade levels per year. This growth is created by teen tutors who themselves have experienced 2 grade levels of growth per year. Teens also demonstrate increased school engagement and improved leadership skills.
