College Access & Transitional Support

Program: As Reach has grown, we have learned that our teens depend on the organization and its staff for more than literacy and leadership development. For that reason, we are starting to offer targeted support to those young people who have participated in our programs.

Jewel - GradCurrently, Reach invites participating 11th grade students to enroll in our College Mentorship Program, a two-year experience through which teens can be matched with an adult mentor to assist with the college admissions and financial aid processes. The organization also offers a limited college scholarship program. By 2020, we expect to add regular alumni learning opportunities and a staff position focused solely on alumni support.

Scope: In 2018, Reach will support fifteen teens through our College Mentorship Program. Additionally, we will offer six college scholarships, totaling $19,000. Finally, we expect to convene a working group of Reach alumni to provide guidance as we begin exploring additional alumni supports.

Impact: In last year’s pilot College Mentorship Program, 11 teens completed the program, receiving individualized support from adult volunteers. These teens earned over $400,000 in college scholarships and enrolled at NC A&T, Norfolk State University, Pennsylvania State University, and more.
