To address this crisis in adolescent literacy, we designed a model based on leading research in Education and Social Work.
We hire and train older students to tutor younger students.
We achieve dramatic improvements with our innovative, three-pronged approach:
Training: Two days each week, teachers guide our tutors in preparing lesson plans grounded in the core components of literacy development.
Tutoring: On two alternating days, our tutors provide reading instruction to elementary school students in need of support.
Compensation: Our tutors are paid for program participation.
We’re getting results.
Reach is currently serving more than 90 students at Perry Street Prep, Eastern Senior High School, and Payne Elementary School.
Thus far, 100% of partner teachers have reported that Reach participants experience significant growth in reading fluency and comprehension.
100% of our tutors report that they would recommend the program to a friend.
