Who can best reach young minds? Other young minds.

We hire and train older students to help younger students learn to read.

We’ll send you updates and news about
our program, our tutors and our success.

87% of DC Public School students do not read at grade level when they enter 9th grade. More troubling, those students who enter 9th grade in the bottom quartile are twenty times more likely to drop out of school than their highest performing peers.

We developed a unique system to help kids learn to read.

To address this crisis in adolescent literacy, we designed a model based on leading research in Education and Social Work.

We hire and train older students to tutor younger students.

We achieve dramatic improvements with our innovative, three-pronged approach:

  • Training: Two days each week, teachers guide our tutors in preparing lesson plans grounded in the core components of literacy development.
  • Tutoring: On two alternating days, our tutors provide reading instruction to elementary school students in need of support.
  • Compensation: Our tutors are paid for program participation.

We’re getting results.

Reach is currently serving more than 90 students at Perry Street Prep, Eastern Senior High School, and Payne Elementary School.

  • Thus far, 100% of partner teachers have reported that Reach participants experience significant growth in reading fluency and comprehension.
  • 100% of our tutors report that they would recommend the program to a friend.

Selected for the 2011 Echoing Green Fellowship, Reach has been identified as one of the world’s most promising social ventures.

We want to train more tutors.

In the future, we expect to work with both public and public charter schools across the District of Columbia. We need your support to do that. Every $20 you give could mean one more hour of tutoring for a kid in need.
